As promised in yesterday’s post, I’m continuing my look at the Chanel Fall collection with a review the Chanel Rouge Gorge Illusion D’ombre Long Wear Luminous Eyeshadow (166).
Chanel says that the Illusions are “intensely shimmering long-wear eyeshadows [that] offer true versatility”. The formula is described as “an innovative gel texture that is both soft and cushiony, allow[ing] it to be worn as eyeshadow or eyeliner”. The spongey mousse-like texture is something new to me and I don’t think I’ve worked with a product that feels quite the same. As an aside, I noticed that the new Illusions have a flattened appearance in the jar whereas the older ones look more rounded. Don’t know what this is about but may be has something to do with complaints that the product use to pop out of the jar?
Rouge Gorge is Limited Edition and I was drawn to its uniqueness. This is my first Illusion D’ombre. And yes, I went for a bold shade. It almost looks straight up orange but actually has some peachy pink tones (better seen in dim light) and a subtle golden pearlescence.
Included with all of the Illusion D’Ombres is a specially designed shadow/liner brush that Chanel says is developed specifically for this unique formula. However, I found the brush to be too stiff to do much more than scoop the product out. For application, I prefer my fingers or regular makeup brushes.
Applied, it does sheer out and doesn’t have quite the brightness or color payoff as one might expect looking at its intensity in the jar. However, Rouge Gorge is buildable to a point. In the demonstration below, I’ve worn it alone as well as paired with a black matte in the crease for contrast. I think Rouge Gorge would work beautifully paired with a deep brown, with the addition of a transition shade and a highlight. Ultimately, to get maxium pigment, however, you’d probably have to used it as a base with with a powdered shadow in a similiar shade on top. Though, part of me also likes it sheered out. It lasted about 7-8 hours before there was some moderate creasing.
So how was my first experience with this formula? I’d say, all in all, it was a pleasant one. For what they are, yes, the Illusions are very expensive. But if you’re up for a little luxury spend, Rouge Gorge is something a little different. As I mentioned yesterday, I may pick up New Moon if we see the collection here simply because it seems to be loved by so many.
The Chanel Rouge Gorge Illusion D’Ombre retails for $36.00 USD and the collection can be found at (Chanel.com, Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom). I haven’t seen the collection online at any U.K. reatilers but if any of you know differently, leave the links below. From what I’ve heard from UK based bloggers, though, the collection is in stores. Not yet available in The Bahamas.
