Chanel Rouge Gorge Illusion D’Ombre Review & Demo

As promised in yesterday’s post, I’m continuing my look at the Chanel Fall collection with a review the Chanel Rouge Gorge Illusion D’ombre Long Wear Luminous Eyeshadow (166).

Chanel Rouge Gorge Illusion Dombre

Chanel says that the Illusions are “intensely shimmering long-wear eyeshadows [that] offer true versatility”. The formula is described as “an innovative gel texture that is both soft and cushiony, allow[ing] it to be worn as eyeshadow or eyeliner”. The spongey mousse-like texture is something new to me and I don’t think I’ve worked with a product that feels quite the same. As an aside, I noticed that the new Illusions have a flattened appearance in the jar whereas the older ones look more rounded. Don’t know what this is about but may be has something to do with complaints that the product use to pop out of the jar?

Rouge Gorge is Limited Edition and I was drawn to its uniqueness. This is my first Illusion D’ombre. And yes, I went for a bold shade. It almost looks straight up orange but actually has some peachy pink tones (better seen in dim light) and a subtle golden pearlescence.

Included with all of the Illusion D’Ombres is a specially designed shadow/liner brush that Chanel says is developed specifically for this unique formula. However, I found the brush to be too stiff to do much more than scoop the product out. For application, I prefer my fingers or regular makeup brushes.

Applied, it does sheer out and doesn’t have quite the brightness or color payoff as one might expect looking at its intensity in the jar. However, Rouge Gorge is buildable to a point. In the demonstration below, I’ve worn it alone as well as paired with a black matte in the crease for contrast. I think Rouge Gorge would work beautifully paired with a deep brown, with the addition of a transition shade and a highlight. Ultimately, to get maxium pigment, however, you’d probably have to used it as a base with with a powdered shadow in a similiar shade on top. Though, part of me also likes it sheered out. It lasted about 7-8 hours before there was some moderate creasing.

So how was my first experience with this formula? I’d say, all in all, it was a pleasant one. For what they are, yes, the Illusions are very expensive. But if you’re up for a little luxury spend, Rouge Gorge is something a little different. As I mentioned yesterday, I may pick up New Moon if we see the collection here simply because it seems to be loved by so many.

The Chanel Rouge Gorge Illusion D’Ombre retails for $36.00 USD and the collection can be found at (Chanel.com, Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom). I haven’t seen the collection online at any U.K. reatilers but if any of you know differently, leave the links below. From what I’ve heard from UK based bloggers, though, the collection is in stores. Not yet available in The Bahamas.

Yes it would! Was actually considering doing that kind of look for this post. Maybe I still will. 🙂

The shade really compliments your brow eyes and the finished makeup looks lovely. I guess it was worth splurging on.

The texture is mousse like but spongy at the same time – a little weird but definitely unique.

I started following you because you live in one of my favorite places and I feel in love with your reviews. You do a wonderful job reviewing and this new eye shadow makes me want to try applying eyeshadow saga in. Anyway, love your blog. Thanks.

Aww, Leah! Thank you so much! Your comment made my day! I so appreciate it and your readership means so much! xo

For some reason I thought this was a blush! I bet it would be a pretty blush shade although not sure if the formula would lend itself to be used as a blusher?
Illusion D’Ombre is a formula that I’ve been curious about but I’m reluctant to part with $41 for an eye shadow that will likely dry out before I finish it!

    1. Kimmy

A couple people have mentioned it’s possible use as a blush, so I’m going to try it and see if it works, hehe. 🙂

Ohhhh, now this one I really like, it’s such a unique rustic shade and I have none quite like it. Great review, Kimmy and it looks really lovely on you.

      Thank you so much Katie!

What an amazing shade! It looks beautiful on it’s own, but I also love how you added a black to make it slightly smokey!

    1. Kimmy

Thanks, Ingrid. I think the black definitely makes it more wearable, somehow. x

  12. Lisa @ Midwest Glam

Now this looks worth the splurge! It’s so pretty. I love the look you created with it. I also think it would make for an awesome blush shade. Which is what I originally thought it was lol. Very pretty, Kimmy!

    1. Kimmy

Hehe. I should probably try to use it as a blush…great idea!

  13. Christina Lovethatlippie

What a stunning colour!!! It reminds me a little of the Maybelline Color Tattoo in Fierce and Tangy- super beautiful!! I love how you’ve teamed it with the deeper crease colour too- it looks gorgeous!!

    1. Kimmy

I don’t think I’ve seen the Maybelline Color Tattoo in Fierce and Tangy up close but I think I know what you mean (having seen it on the shelves at the store). I’ll have to research swatches and see how similar they are.

Thank you, Lauren. Orange looks surprisingly flattering on the eyes. What are some of your favorites?

  16. ingrid

I really like the look that you have created 🙂 Stunning shade xoxo

    1. Kimmy

Thank you, my dear. Big smiles. x

  17. Ela

Looks pretty on you and great review. I guess I wouldn’t wear this kind of shades as they make me look tired for some reason 🙁 xx

    1. Kimmy

Thank you Ela. Oranges can be tricky, especially when worn alone. But I find a matte dark brown or black really helps balance things out. 🙂

  18. Sunny

Oh wow, you went for a bold one for sure! I love how you added a bit of brown to the crease tho. That makes the shade very wearable! I have New Moon and I like it! I personally think it works best in the center of the eyes for some extra light!

    1. Kimmy

Now that I know you enjoy New Moon (I think I may have already known this?), then I’ll definitely keep it on the list for consideration. We’ll likely get the collection in November, hehe. x

  19. Danielle Beautyblog

It’s a colour I would never think to pick up but I love the finished eye look!

Thank you, Danielle. I never thought I’d go for a colour like this either but was so drawn to it for some reason – and it’s actually quite beautiful. 🙂

  21. Laura/Pink Frenzy (@Pink_Frenzy)

I love the color of it! It looks so happy and looks gorgeous paired with the brown shade x

    1. Kimmy

It sure does, the blacks/browns really add some dimension to the shade.

  22. nerdylibrariangirl

I love the Illusion Dombre shadows!

    1. Kimmy

      I’ve gotta try more eventually!
