Liquid lipsticks have been all the rage for some time now and one of the formulas that’s lead the way is Kat Von D’s Everlasting Liquid Lipsticks. Despite their huge popularity, I’d never actually tried them. Why so late to the party? I’m not sure…especially considering that I am a fan of KVD’s beauty line. Her Lock It setting spray (please come back) is my Holy Grail and I love her complexion products as well. Perhaps my tardiness is due in part to the fact that it’s taken me a while to warm up to liquid lipsticks in general. Whatever the reason, I went all in with the Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipsticks Mini Set that was released for the holidays.
Sephora says: A specially curated set of eight mini Everlasting Liquid Lipsticks…that give you the perfect spectrum of statement pops and everyday neutrals, featuring an exclusive preview of two new shades—Plath, a deep russet red, and Roxy, a bright grape color. Mix and match to create one-of-a-kind lip looks, or wear them on their own for a pure matte lip look that won’t wear off. It’s infused with natural comfort-enhancing ingredients, including vitamin E and sunflower seed so you can flaunt lasting matte color that leaves lips feeling comfortable.
This Holiday set includes Everlasting Liquid Lipsticks in Plath (deep russet red), Santa Sangre (poison apple), Mother (dusty mauve pink), Lovesick (mauve nude), Backstage Bambi (vivid hot pink), L.U.V. (rich violet), Roxy (bright grape), and Echo (satin navy blue).
Each mini contains 0.10 oz or 3 mL or product while a full size contains 0.22 oz or 6.6 mL. So the minis are just under half of a full size. Value-wise the kit is a good deal – you’re getting 0.80 oz (24 ml) of product. With the Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipsticks Mini Set retailing for $49.00 USD that’s a cost of about $61.25/oz versus the full size which is $90.90/oz.
Lovesick (mauve nude)
Mother (dusty mauve pink)
Plath (deep russet red)
Santa Sangre (poison apple)
Backstage Bambi (vivid hot pink)
L.U.V. (rich violet)
Roxy (bright grape)
Echo (satin navy blue)
Plath and Roxy are the two new shades offered in this set while all of the others are already part of the permanent line. Roxy is interesting but I have to admit that Plath is more my speed. It’s a stunning rusty brown red shade that’s quite unique in its own right. I actually don’t have another color like it my collection.
The Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipsticks promise long-lasting wear and high-pigment color with a creamy formula that dries down to a true matte finish. And, for me, they are, with some slight performance variations between shades, pretty much as promised.
Pigment-wise the colors are vibrant and offer great payoff. Lovesick, Mother, Plath, Santa Sangre and L.U.V. all applied evenly and with full opacity in one layer. With the deeper shades like Roxy and Echo, however, it took several swipes for me to achieve complete coverage. You can tell by the swatches that both are a little streaky. Good news is that the formula is fairly buildable. The key is to apply thin layers and allow the product to dry down completely. Don’t press your lips together for at least a minute or two. As described, they dry to a matte finish but are not too uncomfortable. Not hydrating by any stretch of the imagination but not sucking the life out of my lips either.
Besides Roxy and Echo, the only other shade that gave me some trouble was Backstage Bambi which has a tendency to cling to dry spots. To be fair, that’s quite common with such bright neon colors. Beyond the broad long-wear claim, there’s no specific promised wear time on these. In my experience, they can last up to 6 hours but you will need to reapply after eating.
Unlike the Laura Mercier Holiday Palette which I reviewed the other day, I feel that the appeal of the KVD set may be more limited. Although I personally loved being able to try eight colors….the set does contain mostly bold shades. Fantastic for a KVD fan, collector of makeup and beauty lover that likes to experiment with color. But those more conservative (and that’s not a bad thing) with their lipstick choices may find fewer options to fit their needs. Personal preference, obviously, also factors in. For example, I won’t be using Backstage Bambi at all – it’s just too bright for my skin tone. In other words, the Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipsticks Mini Set is great value if you’ll use most of the colors. Otherwise, you’d probably be better off purchasing a couple of the shades you like individually.
If you are interested in this set, remember it’s holiday exclusive available at Sephora for a limited time. Again, it retails for $49.00 USD and you get eight liquid lipsticks that are approximately half of a full size.
