MAC Haute Dogs Collection: Rare Breed

Am I the only one who found the press photos and concept behind the limited edition MAC Haute Dogs collection to be kind of hilarious? Of course, that didn’t stop me from checking it out. Overall, the collection didn’t really speak to me – and I thought they could have done much more with the packaging. Despite this general lack of enthusiasm, I did manage to pick up one item: the Mineralize Rich Lipstick in Rare Breed.

MAC describes Rare Breed as a “midtone pinky nude” and I think that’s a pretty accurate description – with the addition of very subtle golden opalescence. It was one of the most unique of the offerings from the Haute Dogs collection and a shade which is quite versatile because of its buildable nature. One swipe gives you a sheer wash of pearly nude pink but with additional layers, not only does coverage becomes more opaque but the pigment actually builds to a deeper nude.

In general, the MAC Mineralize Rich Lipsticks are meant to be a lightweight, hydrating formula with a medium shine finish and I found this to be true. In terms of being long-lasting, Rare Breed survived on my lips about 3 hours tops. A note on application – I have to be sure my lips are in fairly good condition when I wear this because the texture can accentuate lip-lines, especially if I press my lips together.

The Mineralize Rich Lipsticks retail for $24.00 USD/£21.00/ $27.00 CAD. As of the date of post’s publication, Rare Breed is still available on MAC US site, MAC UK site and MAC Canada site.

Did the MAC Haute Dogs Collection appeal to you? Which MAC collections are you looking forward to (or is MAC really not your thing?).

  1. This looks like a nice shade! Though I wasn’t too interested in this collection. I never buy anything from their collections though lol. 🙂 xo

MAC collections can get tiresome sometimes. I probably buy from every third or fourth collection – something like that. Which, when it comes to MAC, means once a month. Lol. They seem to have a new release every other week. 🙂

  2. I thought this collection was a joke at first! Seriously don’t know how those models kept such straight faces! But I do like the shade you purchased. It’s a nice color and will be a great shade to mix with glosses as well.

I kind of did as well, at first glance. Such strange inspiration. I was hoping they’d get creative with the packaging though. :/

  3. I have pretty much the same problem with Mac Impassioned too, love the shade but something it comes across as patchy and accentuate the lines. Using a lip liner beforehand helps a little but I’m too lazy to use one on most days. Haha!

I don’t think I would pick up anything from this collection, just like the Cinderella collection, I am just not attracted to anything. 🙁

I think MAC just does too many collections – they seem less and less special. I’d rather they do less and get more creative – with the packaging as well as with the colors themselves. That being said, I usually check out most collections even if I don’t end up buying anything 🙂

  4. For me, this lipstick is somewhat appealing cos I like the shade, but I am not too impressed that it can stand for only 3 hours. It could be a little hassle cos you have to keep it in check, I guess 🙂

Yeah is definitely one of those formulas that requires re-application throughout the day which I suppose is understandable for this type of finish.

  5. I’ve had one of the Mineral Rich lipsticks on my wish list for ages – Lady at Play – but something about the tube bugs me a little. Seems bulky and weirdly propertioned. And, it’s more expensive than their regular lipstick line! But, this formula sounds great… I think I may have to give it a chance.
I was initially excited for a dog themed collection, after that awesome feline collection MAC put out a while back. Nothing in this collection screams out at me – I’m not a fan of the mineral eye shadows at all. And, I’m on a No-Buy, so there’s that. 😛

Yeah the shape of the tube makes storage annoying. It fits in one of those larger acrylic holders though. But generally, I prefer more traditional packaging as well.

  6. This looks like the perfect neutral shade! I agree that they could’ve done more with the packaging though.. it looks a little bland

Thanks, Sunny! Yes, you’re right, that’s a great way to describe it – its a healthy looking Nude. 🙂

  8. I am obsessed with MAC, so I try to stay away whenever they release a new collection, as I end up buying stuff I don’t need if I go check them out…

I wasn’t terribly interested in this collection, until MAC sent me some of the products haha. The Mineralise eyeshadows are gorgeous, but I just don’t really get how it’s dog related and it hasn’t really hit the mark for me.

Wish I’d been that lucky, lol. There was a quad that looked a little interesting but at the end of the day, I just wasn’t that drawn to the collection. 🙂

This was my first of this formula as well. It’s not my favorite but it’s nice. 🙂
