A girl can never have too many lipsticks, right, right? If any of you recall one of my first MAC cosmetics posts way back when, I’d shared my MAC lipstick collection. In that post, I talked about how there were only 12 because I was determined not to go beyond what could fill my acrylic organizer. This number didn’t include the lipsticks from other brands that I own, of course. We’re talking strictly MAC. Needless to say, I was unsuccessful and it’s grown well beyond 12, helped along by my recent purchase of three MAC Matte Lipsticks: Whirl, Stone and Men Love Mystery.
All three of these lipsticks were released in the MAC The Matte Lip collection (which, thankfully, is permanent). Among the 22 shades included, there were some that were already available in the regular line, but most were new. And some are lipstick versions of famous lip pencils (i.e. Whirl, Stone).
The collection is a combination of MAC’s regular matte formula and retro matte formula. As anyone familiar with MAC finishes would know, both mattes and retro mattes have a flat finish, but the retros are really, really flat (almost like a lip pencil) and tend to feel drier on the lips. None of the shades that I chose are retro mattes. I just can’t handle the formula. But the regular mattes aren’t so bad and, actually, I was quite surprised by how comfortable and creamy they were.
Whirl and Stone are extremely opaque and apply evenly and smoothly, no tugging or dragging whatsoever. Men Love Mystery was slightly less opaque, but still provided plenty of coverage and application was also smooth and even. All three shades lasted about 5 hours (without eating). They did not dry out the lips (but they definitely didn’t moisturize either).
Whirl – a dirty rose with a Matte finish
Stone – a muted grayish taupe-brown with a Matte finish
Men Love Mystery – a lavender violet with a Matte finish
What do you guys think? Personally, I love them all! Whirl has that 90’s vibe which takes me back, Stone is surprisingly stunning and Men Love Mystery is like my perfect version of Heroine (not as bright and purple) and with some grey tones to it. As mentioned, the collection is permanent and can be found at MAC locations and online (U.S., U.K., Canada etc).
Did you, or are you planning to, grab of the new MAC Matte lipsticks?
