It’s been a while since I’ve featured drugstore products and what better way to do so than with some new goodies from Maybelline? I absolutely adore the 24 hour Color Tattoos. There were about eight in my collection that I used constantly until they dried out (after years). Should probably re-stock. Anyway, when I saw that they had released a new product, the Maybelline Color Tattoo Eye Chrome, I definitely wanted to try them. Luckily I was stateside recently and able to pick up a couple.
Maybelline says: Metallic intensity and tattoo tenacity brilliantly combine to saturate your lids in liquid chrome shine for up to 24 hours. Basically, they are cream eye shadows with a metallic finish.
The Maybelline Color Tattoo Eye Chromes are available in 10 shades. I chose two: Fools Gold and Electric Emerald. Fools Gold (top) is blackened green hued shade with gold glitter and Electric Emerald (bottom) is a jeweled toned green.
First off, these have a nice light weight, whipped texture. Second, and perhaps more importantly, they set super fast. Something to keep in mind when applying to the eyes. Although the Maybelline Color Tattoo Eye Chromes feature a doe foot applicator, which I use to dab the product onto the lid, I find it best to blend out with a brush or fingers. The warmth of fingers helps off set the super quick dry time, making it a little easier to work with. That being said, I have no problem blending out with a brush if I work fast enough. And Maybelline weren’t kidding when they said 24 hours of wear. These shadows do not budge at all. An oil-based or some other heavy duty makeup remover is a must to get them off.
O.K. so the budge-proof aspect means that the Maybelline Color Tattoo Eye Chromes wear very well without a primer and without creasing. However, the fast dry down means that there is little room for error. Therefore, you gotta blend out immediately. Additionally, they (the two shades I have anyway) have the potential to become patchy if layered on too thickly, especially Foods Golds. This is another reason I prefer to apply with fingers. If you want more pigment, however, you’ll have to use a (synthetic) brush. Unfortunately, a brush does increase your chances of patchiness (on the lid – they apply to the lower lash line with full pigment and zero issues).
Here is the eye look I came up with:
Fools Gold is applied to my lid and smudged up into the crease while Electric Emerald is on the lower lash line. I did cheat a bit and add a touch of gold glitter on top of Fools Gold. This intensifies the gold elements already present in that shade. And anyway, as with the original Color Tattoos, that’s how I’d wear the Eye Chromes – paired with other shadows rather than on their own. (P.S. I’m working on consistency with lighting, getting use to a mini ring light I’m trialing).
The Maybelline Color Tattoo Eye Chromes retail for about $9.99 USD and can be purchased at most drugstores. I purchased at Walgreens.
