This has been a long time coming. I think I said that already. But finally, they are mine! The NARS Audacious Lipsticks in Vanessa and Dominique! I’ve lusted after these beauties since day one, especially Dominique. But as both shades are NARS (and Barney’s) exclusives, they wouldn’t be easy for me to get my hands on. Fortunately, as is the case most times, some travelling family members were able to pick them up for me. Yay!
At this point, you guys have probably heard and seen everything there is to hear or see about the NARS Audacious Lipsticks. And I thought twice about actually posting a review, but in the end, after a long distance love affair – I felt I had to share my thoughts.
NARS says: Modern lipstick so shamelessly seductive in touch and texture the sensation is audacious. Unadulterated luxury glides on like satin across skin with single-stroke coverage. Luxurious texture and enriched with ingredients to smooth and nourish lips. Long-lasting.
Surprisingly, not the usual rubberized finish that NARS is known for, the lipsticks are housed in heavy black, plastic packaging featuring a semi-matte finish. Additional features include the “NARS” logo embossed on the lower half of the case and a magnetic closure.
NARS Audacious Lipstick – Vanessa
I choose Vanessa because I thought it would be a fantastic, slightly deep MLBB shade. And it is. This warm mauvey nude has a hint of pink and brown which makes it perfect! As promised by NARS, I am able to achieve full color coverage in one swipe and the product applied smoothly and evenly.
Vanessa has a satin finish and lasting power between 5 – 6 hours, depending on your activities (i.e. if you easy a greasy meal, it will wear faster – if you use a fork, it will last longer). One thing I did notice is that, on my lips, the shade darkens slightly over time, becoming warmer and almost more rosy-brown.
NARS Audacious Lipstick – Dominique
Dominique was love at first sight. It’s a difficult shade to describe and judging from swatches I’ve seen online, worn on the lips, it can look a little different from person to person. As is the case with many lip products, skin-tone and lip tone account for variations. In fact, I’m wearing a foundation that’s a touch too dark for me in these photos. Anyway, I’d describe Dominique as a dusty, warm, purple-lilac with hints of grey and pink.
I’ve said this before, but my lips have a mauve tone to them that tends to make colors look cooler. As with Vanessa, I am able to achieve full color coverage in one swipe and the product applied smoothly and evenly. Lasting power was a little less though, at about 4 – 5 hours activity dependent.
Final thoughts on the Audacious Formula
The formula is light-weight and fairly long-wearing with great pigmentation and a creamy, comfortable texture that provides smooth and even application. I didn’t find them to be drying nor are they particularly hydrating but remain fairly comfortable throughout wear time. The Audacious lipsticks are scent-free. Both shades, Vanessa and Dominique, faded evenly and without the dreaded “ring around the lip”.
Retailing for $32.00 USD/£24.00, the NARS Audacious Lipsticks are quite pricey. But I like them as much as I do other luxury lipsticks in the same price range such as the YSL Rouge Courtures and Chanel Rouge Allure Velvets. As mentioned the shades Dominique and Vanessa are part of the ten NARS/Barney’s exclusives (Nars.com, Nars.co.uk) but the other 30 shades in the line can be purchased at retailers such as Sephora, Space NK and *Blue Mercury, among others.
