NARS Audacious Mascara Review: Before & After

You know when something’s been a long time coming? When you knew it, whatever “it” is, would happen, but you just didn’t know when? Well, that’s how I felt about the NARS Audacious lipsticks. After pining over them for a year…or more…since whenever they were first released, I’m finally the proud owner of two. But that’s not what this post is about. Sorry. That tease was completely unintentional, but leads me to what is the subject of this post: the NARS Audacious Mascara. You see, when sending for the lipsticks, I also thought I test this guy out…

NARS says: Designed with over 200 molded bristles and lengthening hooks, NARS’ lash-catching brush evenly grips and coats lashes from roots to tips. Simultaneously separates, lengthens, and amplifies. Its tapered tip finishes off the inner and outer reaches of your imagination, while enhancing lower lashes.

Packaged in the signature black, rubberized shell, the product’s understated elegance cannot be ignored even if the pain-in-the-you-know-what finish is prone to attracting finger prints like nobody’s business. Especially when you’re handling makeup. I had to take these photos as quickly as possible. Sigh.

The extremely flexible rubber/silicone wand features “hook-like” bristles that really do grab onto the lashes. And I’m not kidding when I say the wand is flexible, seriously, you can bend it in half.

Some reviews have noted that the wand’s hooks can be uncomfortable to use, possibly poking one in the eye, but I didn’t have this problem at all. Also, the formula is very black, which is what I prefer. For now, I believe Black Moon is the only shade offered.

While the design of the wand definitely helps to evenly coat the lashes in a beautiful gel-like, light-weight formula, it didn’t work as well as I’d hoped to separate them. For my personal situation (sparse lashes that are a decent length but spaced far apart), when I tried to build beyond three layers, I ran the risk of my lashes clumping together. Given the spaced far apart issue, when it comes to lashes, volume is major concern/constant struggle for me and while the Audacious mascara was great for adding length it fell a little short on volume. But to be fair, it doesn’t exactly tout itself as a “voluminizer” promising only to “amplify”. I have no bottom lashes to speak of so the mascara didn’t do much in that department. Finally, the semi-wet formula requires at least a minute dry time. A few times, I applied it and within seconds went straight outside (instantaneous sweat situation) and experienced minor smudging. But this isn’t something to worry about too much – as long as you let it dry for 30 – 60 seconds, its fine. For me this means doing my mascara before my lipstick or powder, for example.

The pros of NARS Audacious mascara are that it lengthens well, feels light weight and that its gel like texture makes for comfortably layering.  It’s one of those that you can use for both a natural as well as a more dramatic look. However, separating the lashes can be challenge and, personally, I would prefer a little more volume.

The NARS Audacious mascara retails for $26.00 USD/£21.00/C$34.00 and so far, I’ve seen it online NARS US, Nordstrom, Sephora Canada, and Space NK UK. Although I didn’t spot the full size on their site, apparently NARS UK is offering a complimentary deluxe sized sample of the Audacious Mascara with any purchase using the code: AUDACIOUS (expires 31/8/2015). 1. I look for Volume over length in my mascara, so I think I can save my money and not buy this one.

    1. Glad it was helpful. Volume is definitely my priority is well. Mascara is so personal. 🙂

  2. I always get annoyed with wands that are so ‘bendy’, I prefer the ones that are ery stiff, I find I have a lot more control that way!

    1. It’s so funny because they always advertise flexibility (or bendy) as allowing one to have more control. 🙂 I find it doesn’t bother me either way – but I do want plenty of volume. 🙂

  3. I like the wands like that, I think they are really good. It definitely gives some volume, but with that price I would expect a bit more. x

    1. I agree, I’d like a little more volume as well. 🙂

  4. Great review! I just read another review on this mascara and they said it was flaky? Does it flake for you? Doesn’t sound like it’s worth the price. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! 🙂 xo

    1. It doesn’t flake on me. Just smudges a little if moisture hits the area too soon after application, i.e. sweat. 🙂 But allowing at least a minute to dry and it’s fine.

  5. I absolutely LOVE the audacious lipsticks, they are amazing!! So I definitely want to try this out, I’m running out of my favourite NARS concealer so thank you so much for sharing the UK code, would be super helpful to try a sample of this!

    1. Score! Let me know if you get a hold of the sample and what you think. 🙂

  6. Great review, Kimmy! Personally I don’t think this is the mascara for me. I prefer a mascara with a normal wand and normal bristles. I feel that it works better for me.

  7. Such a great review Kimmy, I love the idea that the wand is flexible, Not sure about the price for only lengthening though, I love something that gives volume!!! I really wanted to love this mascara 🙁

    1. I wanted to love it to. It’s nice, mind you, but just not perfect for me. 🙂

  8. I totally agree with you about the NARS packaging- it looks awesome but gets dirty so quickly. It does look a bit clumpy but I think I’d give it a try.

    1. Right? I suppose the packaging is iconic now so they can’t get rid of it but its gets annoying (though it’s still beautiful). I didn’t find the formula on the Audacious lipsticks to be clumpy at all. They are really rich in pigment so if you have many lip lines like I do, close up, they may emphasize those lines more. 🙂

  9. I feel you on the lashes department, mine is pretty much the same but shorter. LOL! I don’t think I’ll be picking this up to try, my lashes definitely need something better. Great review as always, Kimmy!

    1. Sparse lash sisters, hehe. Thanks, hun. Glad it was helpful. x

  10. That tube design is beautiful! So understated and the signature red end. I visibly cringed seeing the wand bent in those photos – but I do appreciate you demonstrating the flex of the silicone wand! 🙂
For me though, it’s not volumizing enough, I prefer thickening than defining / lengthening mascaras.

    1. It was just so flexible, I had to demonstrate. It surprised me. Sorry, hehe. 🙂

  11. Delighted to see this review because I was curious about this mascara. The lack of volume would make it a no go for me because that’s the very thing I look for in a mascara! xx

    Beautylymin

    1. Yeah, it’s too bad. But bear in my mind lashes are on the sparse side – they are spaced quite far apart. So this may work better on others who don’t have that problem. 🙂

  12. Even though I like these kind of plastic wand, sadly this mascara is not something I will be eager to try out as I always prefer volume over length x

    Beauty with charm

    1. Seems many of us have that in common. Volume is really a challenge for me with many mascaras, so this might work better for others. 🙂

    Lovely review!

    Made in MauveBloglovin

    1. Thanks!

  13. I love the bendy pictures! Too cool! It really does lengthen nicely, but I’m another volume lover. Plus I don’t like those spiky type of wands. I almost always end up poking an eye out.

    1. Hehe. It’s funny but I almost never poke my eyes. Actually, I think it’s because I don’t typically get super close to my lash roots when applying mascara. I probably should do though to get the maximum effect, huh? I mean I do get close but I’ve seen people like basically go into their eyeball, hehe.

  14. This actually sounds perfect for my needs! I need definition from my mascara and want it light weight so this sounds pretty much what I need! Will check it out!

    1. That’s great. Your lashes are pretty thick and luscious so I think this would work really well for you, Divya.

  15. Great detailed review Kimmy! I need my mascara to lengthen my lashes but also give them volume, so this mascara won’t be something I’m willing to spend my money on. But the brush wand does look good to me. x

    1. Thank you, sweetie. Gotta anything you need to order from NARS? Maybe you can add the sample to your cart, hehe. 🙂

  16. i have been really curious about this one, so thanks for the review 🙂 ellesees.net

    1. You’re welcome, Elle. I’m so happy it was helpful. x

  17. Thanks for your review!
I love NARS in general so of course I’ve been curious about this one. I don’t really get along with teethes brush like this, and I guess this isn’t going to be an exception for me. I wonder if they also have a wp version, though? 🙂

    1. You’re welcome, Lena. So glad it was useful. I think there’s only this one for now. Maybe they will release a waterproof version at some point? 🙂

  18. Hey Kimmy, thanks for the review! You have basically made me realize that I won’t need to give this a go! I think our lashes are similar, so I REALLY REALLY need some more volume! I actually don’t get along that well with flexible wands for some reason. It’s a skip for me!

    1. I’m here to help, hehe. We all know you’ve helped me make so many decisions. The hunt for the perfect mascara continues. For me, Chanel Le Volume comes the closet but it can verge on spidery if one goes too far with it. 🙂

  19. I do really like an intense black mascara, but usually don’t like the wetter formulas. I feel like this wouldn’t be volumizing enough for me, so thanks for the review!

    1. You’re welcome sweetie! Yeah, definitely a bummer about the volume…it’s too bad.

You know, I’ve always wondered why brands are so proud to tell us that their mascara wand is “flexible”… So what? I’m not going to press it against my lids so hard that it will bend anyway! I really don’t get that, I just don’t see how it’s useful for normal mascara application.

    Beaumiroir

    1. Hehe. I’m not sure really. I suppose that a flexible wand allows the head to move better in whatever direction you wish. Some say it helps get the lashes better from root to tip. 🙂

  20. Now I’m itching to make a purchase at NARS site to get a sample. 😀
