You know when something’s been a long time coming? When you knew it, whatever “it” is, would happen, but you just didn’t know when? Well, that’s how I felt about the NARS Audacious lipsticks. After pining over them for a year…or more…since whenever they were first released, I’m finally the proud owner of two. But that’s not what this post is about. Sorry. That tease was completely unintentional, but leads me to what is the subject of this post: the NARS Audacious Mascara. You see, when sending for the lipsticks, I also thought I test this guy out…
NARS says: Designed with over 200 molded bristles and lengthening hooks, NARS’ lash-catching brush evenly grips and coats lashes from roots to tips. Simultaneously separates, lengthens, and amplifies. Its tapered tip finishes off the inner and outer reaches of your imagination, while enhancing lower lashes.
Packaged in the signature black, rubberized shell, the product’s understated elegance cannot be ignored even if the pain-in-the-you-know-what finish is prone to attracting finger prints like nobody’s business. Especially when you’re handling makeup. I had to take these photos as quickly as possible. Sigh.
The extremely flexible rubber/silicone wand features “hook-like” bristles that really do grab onto the lashes. And I’m not kidding when I say the wand is flexible, seriously, you can bend it in half.
Some reviews have noted that the wand’s hooks can be uncomfortable to use, possibly poking one in the eye, but I didn’t have this problem at all. Also, the formula is very black, which is what I prefer. For now, I believe Black Moon is the only shade offered.
While the design of the wand definitely helps to evenly coat the lashes in a beautiful gel-like, light-weight formula, it didn’t work as well as I’d hoped to separate them. For my personal situation (sparse lashes that are a decent length but spaced far apart), when I tried to build beyond three layers, I ran the risk of my lashes clumping together. Given the spaced far apart issue, when it comes to lashes, volume is major concern/constant struggle for me and while the Audacious mascara was great for adding length it fell a little short on volume. But to be fair, it doesn’t exactly tout itself as a “voluminizer” promising only to “amplify”. I have no bottom lashes to speak of so the mascara didn’t do much in that department. Finally, the semi-wet formula requires at least a minute dry time. A few times, I applied it and within seconds went straight outside (instantaneous sweat situation) and experienced minor smudging. But this isn’t something to worry about too much – as long as you let it dry for 30 – 60 seconds, its fine. For me this means doing my mascara before my lipstick or powder, for example.
The pros of NARS Audacious mascara are that it lengthens well, feels light weight and that its gel like texture makes for comfortably layering. It’s one of those that you can use for both a natural as well as a more dramatic look. However, separating the lashes can be challenge and, personally, I would prefer a little more volume.
The NARS Audacious mascara retails for $26.00 USD/£21.00/C$34.00 and so far, I’ve seen it online NARS US, Nordstrom, Sephora Canada, and Space NK UK. Although I didn’t spot the full size on their site, apparently NARS UK is offering a complimentary deluxe sized sample of the Audacious Mascara with any purchase using the code: AUDACIOUS (expires 31/8/2015).
