October Favorites: #APerfectPairing

I am so excited to dedicate my October Favorites to a really cool initiative I heard my girl Trisha (A Glittery Life) talk about a few weeks ago. Her and a couple of her awesome make-up artist buddies have collaborated to launch an Instagram account, A Perfect Pairing, which features their top “perfect pairing” picks. This can be anything from a lip combo to a skin care duo and other fantastic beauty secrets brought to you from the leading beauties in the industry! Inspired, I wanted to join in all of the fun! Now, I want to be clear that I’m not part of the initiative and have no association with A Perfect Pairing – other than being an enthusiastic fan!

October Favorites - A Perfect Pairing

So this month, I have focused my favorites picks on this concept of a perfect pair. And trust me, it was kind of easy and you start to realise just how many perfect pairings you have without really trying.

First off, let’s start with skincare:

I’ve fought a battle with my skin these past few months. While working fiercely to combat my out of control breakouts (regular and cystic acne), I was simultaneously experiencing a heightened level of dryness and dehydration. This month, two products have really stood out to me.

October Favorites - A Perfect Pairing - Dr Lin Acne Spot Treatment and Ren Glycol Lactic Mask

To help treat breakouts, I’ve been reaching for the Dr. Lin Skincare Acne Spot Corrector*. I find it less drying/irritating than some of the other Benzoyl Peroxide based products I’ve used in the past. However, it is just as effective as my all time favorite spot treatment which is the Clinique Emergency Gel-Lotion (which is apparently no longer sold in my jurisdiction, boo!). Bonus, it’s a drugstore brand so the price isn’t bad.

Although the Dr. Lin is relatively gentle, let’s be real, with any acne-fighting products there is going to be some dryness and flaking happening. So to gently exfoliate my skin, I’ve been using the the Ren Glycol Lactic Radiance Renewal Mask* rather than a physical exfoliator (i.e. granules). I reviewed this mask as part of my Ren Skincare Brand Spotlight.

The combination of these two products has help my skin maintain a fairly decent balance.

Onto makeup

October Favorites - A Perfect Pairing - Cover Fx Acne Primer and It Cosmetics No 50 Anti-Aging Primer

Time to prime! Again, my skin conditions have dictated my primer choices. As an all over, hydrating primer, I’ve been reaching for the It Cosmetics No. 50 Serum Anti-Aging Primer (reviewed here). BUT, I also want to keep my T-Zone in check. That’s where this handy deluxe sample of the CoverFx BB Gel Mattifying Anti-Blemish Treatment comes into play. I use it not only to mattify certain areas of the skin, but, because it contains treatments such as salicylic acid and thyme extract, I also apply it directly onto blemishes. It is tinted and comes in 10+ shades.

And to complete the base….

October Favorites - A Perfect Pairing - Chanel Velvet Foundation and Urband Decay Optical Blurring Brush

In my mind, there has never been a more perfect pairing than the Urban Decay Good Karma Optical Blurring Brush and my beloved Chanel Perfection Lumière Velvet Foundation. I’d not previously used the two products together. However a few weeks ago, when all of my other makeup brushes were dirty, I picked up the UD Blurring Blush to buff in my Chanel Velvet and it was magic! I’ve used this brush before many times with many different foundation formulas and I’ve used the foundation with many other brushes or sponges. But it was like the two were made for each other. The UD Blurring Brush was designed to be used with the UD Naked Foundation and I’ve used it for that purpose in the past, but if you ask me, it works even better with the Chanel foundation.

So that’s it for my October Favorites. I’m sorry they’re weren’t any social media picks but I promise there will be next month. In the meantime, you can check out some of my favorite bloggers and vloggers from past months here. You’ve tried it? Isn’t it fantastic? I mean the UD Brush just applies the Chanel foundation like a dream, like you’re buffing air on your face. I can’t explain the heavenly-ness of it adequately, lol. xx

  2. I would LOVE to try that Chanel foundation. It sounds like a dream! And that UD brush too!!!! Great choices girl!!! 🙂

Thank you, Julie! Sorry I missed this earlier. I really do love the Chanel foundation. You just have to be wary when you have dryness. I think the perfect time to wear this is the Spring and late Summer/early Fall. 🙂 xo

  3. Oo ill have to look at that instagram! I love Dr Lin products, I get such bad skin in the winter, I may try this one!

I’m interested in trying more of Dr. Lin, now! Which of the products have you tried? xo

  4. Lovely pics! That REN mask sounds really interesting.

Thank you, Melissa! I’m afraid I may have to invest in the full size of the mask at some point… 🙂

  5. I’ve tagged you in the TMI tag! 🙂

Thank you, Levi! I’ll check it out. 🙂

  6. First time I’ve heard of the Urban Decay brush! I recently picked up some new Real Technique brushes which are lovely.. yet to try the buffing brush actually, will see if it competes with my Louise Young (LY34) brush. I’m hoping to get my hands on some Sephora brushes aswell, just too bad about the shipping cost and the minimum amount to spend.. anyways, I’m just rambling all over the place aren’t I? The no.50 serum primer looks interesting! Anything with the words ‘serum’ and ‘anti-aging’ always attracts me since those products usually work lovely on my skin! The Chanel foundations sounds so lovely aswell, but I’m afraid it isn’t made for my skintype. Perhaps the Chanel Aqualumiere seems to be more up my street! Actually, I should stop thinking about new purchases since I’ve spend soooo much money lately! Great post. 😉

Haha! It’s a never ending list, isn’t it? I wish you guys had better access to Sephora. It makes no sense to me because didn’t Sephora start in France? I mean, I know I don’t have one either but someone I know is always able to pick me up stuff in the U.S. I try to keep online ordering to a minimum as well because of duty (customs) is 45%. O.K. Now I’m rambling! BUT I have a list going for the Sephora sale next week…so dangerous! xo

  7. Aw, the pairing idea is genius! I want to find a good spot corrector and face mask that works for my skin too 🙂

The Dr. Lin one is good, better than the Neutrogena in my opinion when it comes to drugstore. 🙂 You can find Dr. Lin on amazon, ULTA and I think Walgreens in the U.S. – what’s your skin type? Depending on what kind of mask your looking for I know the drugstore has great options. I picked up several of the Freeman packet masks and will be reviewing them in a few weeks! 🙂

  8. I haven’t tried any of the products in your favorites, but they all sound good 🙂 Lovely post! xo’s
