I am so excited to dedicate my October Favorites to a really cool initiative I heard my girl Trisha (A Glittery Life) talk about a few weeks ago. Her and a couple of her awesome make-up artist buddies have collaborated to launch an Instagram account, A Perfect Pairing, which features their top “perfect pairing” picks. This can be anything from a lip combo to a skin care duo and other fantastic beauty secrets brought to you from the leading beauties in the industry! Inspired, I wanted to join in all of the fun! Now, I want to be clear that I’m not part of the initiative and have no association with A Perfect Pairing – other than being an enthusiastic fan!
So this month, I have focused my favorites picks on this concept of a perfect pair. And trust me, it was kind of easy and you start to realise just how many perfect pairings you have without really trying.
First off, let’s start with skincare:
I’ve fought a battle with my skin these past few months. While working fiercely to combat my out of control breakouts (regular and cystic acne), I was simultaneously experiencing a heightened level of dryness and dehydration. This month, two products have really stood out to me.
To help treat breakouts, I’ve been reaching for the Dr. Lin Skincare Acne Spot Corrector*. I find it less drying/irritating than some of the other Benzoyl Peroxide based products I’ve used in the past. However, it is just as effective as my all time favorite spot treatment which is the Clinique Emergency Gel-Lotion (which is apparently no longer sold in my jurisdiction, boo!). Bonus, it’s a drugstore brand so the price isn’t bad.
Although the Dr. Lin is relatively gentle, let’s be real, with any acne-fighting products there is going to be some dryness and flaking happening. So to gently exfoliate my skin, I’ve been using the the Ren Glycol Lactic Radiance Renewal Mask* rather than a physical exfoliator (i.e. granules). I reviewed this mask as part of my Ren Skincare Brand Spotlight.
The combination of these two products has help my skin maintain a fairly decent balance.
Time to prime! Again, my skin conditions have dictated my primer choices. As an all over, hydrating primer, I’ve been reaching for the It Cosmetics No. 50 Serum Anti-Aging Primer (reviewed here). BUT, I also want to keep my T-Zone in check. That’s where this handy deluxe sample of the CoverFx BB Gel Mattifying Anti-Blemish Treatment comes into play. I use it not only to mattify certain areas of the skin, but, because it contains treatments such as salicylic acid and thyme extract, I also apply it directly onto blemishes. It is tinted and comes in 10+ shades.
And to complete the base….
In my mind, there has never been a more perfect pairing than the Urban Decay Good Karma Optical Blurring Brush and my beloved Chanel Perfection Lumière Velvet Foundation. I’d not previously used the two products together. However a few weeks ago, when all of my other makeup brushes were dirty, I picked up the UD Blurring Blush to buff in my Chanel Velvet and it was magic! I’ve used this brush before many times with many different foundation formulas and I’ve used the foundation with many other brushes or sponges. But it was like the two were made for each other. The UD Blurring Brush was designed to be used with the UD Naked Foundation and I’ve used it for that purpose in the past, but if you ask me, it works even better with the Chanel foundation.
So that’s it for my October Favorites. I’m sorry they’re weren’t any social media picks but I promise there will be next month. In the meantime, you can check out some of my favorite bloggers and vloggers from past months here.
