Modere is an online based company which offers a range of personal care, health & wellness, and household products that, according to the company, “are equal parts safe, high performing, and beautifully designed”. The Modere “experience is catered specifically to the modern lifestyle, which takes place at the intersection of stylish, safe, and smart.”
I recently had the opportunity to test out several products from their Skincare and Hair care Collection which includes the: Exfoliant, Anti-Aging Serum, Dual Action Eye Gel, Antioxidant Gel, and Antioxidant Hair Serum.
These five (5) items form Modere’s new Beauty Box which recently launched and is currently on offer for $79.99 USD plus tax (at a $140.00 value). The Beauty Box contains the full sized products mentioned, as well as sample sizes of each (excluding the Dual Action Eye Gel). The deal is, you use the samples to see if you like products. If you don’t fancy them, after seven (7) days you return the unopened full sized products using the pre-printed return label. The sample sized products and Dual Action Eye Gel ares yours to keep. If do love all the products and want to keep them, Modere will charge you the $79.99 USD plus tax. Alternatively, if you only want to keep a selection of the products, you will be charged the individual retail cost of each product you keep.
As I received these products gratis, I cannot speak to how the logistics of the deal work out in real life. It does sound fairly reasonable – though the seven (7) day trial period does seem a little short to both try and return the products. In terms of overall cost, whether $79.99 USD is a good value will depend on each individuals’ approach to their skincare budget. I’ve been known to spend upwards $50.00 or as low as $1.99 on a single skincare product.
Moving on to the products themselves, I’ve testing them for about five (5) weeks and am now ready to offer my thoughts. 🙂
What the company says: “Just a hint of prickly pear gently releases dead surface cells with friendly enzymatic action. Jojoba wax beads massage the complexion, rolling away impurities and leaving behind gentle moisture. Brush-like bamboo particles caresses the skin to visually resurface the appearance of the complexion”.
Key Ingredients: Prickly Pear Extract, Jojoba Beads, Bamboo Extract, Silk Amino Acids and Vitamin E.
My thoughts: This exfoliator was probably my favorite product. It has a very creamy consistency and the grains are effective but fine enough to be very gentle on the skin. The scent is pretty much indiscernible and skin is left feeling baby soft. It’s also well priced with a retail value: $12.99 USD. I would keep this product.
What the company says: “Modere’s Anti-Aging Serum achieves the perfect balance of preserving the years and enhancing your natural look, with a quick absorbing, fluid elixir that knows no number. Take care of those well lived laugh lines and freckles for a more youthful appearance.”
Key Ingredients: Rye Seed Extract, Maca (Hydrolyzed Lepidium Meyenii Root), Hydrolyzed Elastin, Gotu Kola and Banana Flower.
My thoughts: The product gets stars for packaging (love a good pump) and consistency – it is both fast absorbing and lightweight. However, it terms of efficacy, I cannot say that I noticed any major differences in my skin. And at 30+, I do have some fine lines so I can definitely speak to “anti-aging” lol. With a retail price of $39.99 USD, this is a pass for me.
What the company says: “Not all Vitamin C formulas are the same – preserving powerful nutrients until being applied to the skin is an advanced science. We use a novel, waterless get formula to protect Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate, a highly effective but delicate form of Vitamin C.”
Key Ingredients: Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate, Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Tocopheryl Acetate, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis and Retinyl Palmitate.
My thoughts: At first, I had a little trouble adjusting to the texture of this product. It is meant to be used as skincare, after you apply the serum, but it feels a lot like a silicone-based primer. I know that it is the Dimethicone that gives it that consistency and while Dimethicone is included in many skin care products, it’s quite noticeable in this one. The gel has a very pleasant citrus smell that reminds me of my It Cosmetics Primer. And the concept is very similar. While this is not marketed as such, it acts very much like a skincare/primer combo. Vitamin C is a very good antioxidant for the skin. My issue is that many Vitamin C based products give me blackheads – and this one was no exception. The retail price is reasonable at $29.99 USD. I’m on the fence as whether I would keep (although I’ll probably keep using it a few days a week).
Dual Action Eye Gel
What the company says: “Our Dual Action Eye Gel is a product you’ll immediately work into your morning routine. In fact, it might be THE routine. It soothes under-eye puffiness and reduces the appearance of dark circles, fine lines, and wrinkles. Feel confident you’re putting your best face forward; it works throughout each day to brighten and renew.”
Key Ingredients: Hydrolyzed Lupine Protein, Glucosamine HCL, Alfalfa Extract and Hydrolyzed Elastin.
My thoughts: A decent gel-based eye product. I did feel like it temporarily tightened the area around my eyes and depuffed slightly. However, it was not nearly moisturizing enough for me. I found myself having to layer another moisturizer underneath it. Retails for $29.99 USD which is about mid-range. I probably would not purchase.
Antioxidant Hair Serum
What the company says: “Replenish your hair and nourish its brilliance. Antioxidant Hair Serum works effortlessly to banish frizz and impart intense shine. The result is a silky touch, weightless volume, and probably a few second glances”
Key Ingredients: Kukui Seed or Kendi Oil, Argan Oil, Jojoba Seed Oil, Ethyl Macadamiate and Tamanu or Nyamplung Oil.
My thoughts: I was most excited to try this product as I’ve become more and more concerned with the health of my hair over the years. I work about a pump of the oil-serum into my hair after washing and, sometimes, in between washes. It absorbs well without feeling greasy and the smell is light but pleasant. I found it did a decent job of controlling frizz but where it really shone was how luscious it made my girls look. Even better, you can use the serum on other areas that need a little extra boost like your cuticles and elbows. With a moderate retail price of $21.99 and packed full of good oils, I’d keep this for sure.
Final thoughts: The two standout products, for me, were the Exfoliant and Hair Serum. The Antioxidant Gel was somewhere in between (mostly because of my Vitamin C challenges), while the Eye Gel and Anti-Aging Serum were just O.K. If you enjoy trying new skincare and you feel that you could work with the 7 day turn around time, then I would say the Beauty Box might be worth looking into. 🙂
