Travel Exclusive Tuesdays: Estee Lauder Ingenious Color Palette

We’re just on a roll with the new series around here, aren’t we? “Travel Elusive Tuesdays” is one I’ve been meaning to launch for some time now. The genesis of the series is explained here (under the Special Features section on the page “Travel Exclusives – Duty Free Cosmetics”). Basically, when it comes to cosmetics shopping in The Bahamas, although the brand/product availability is limited, within the brands that are here, we do have access to a range of special travel collection items that you would normally find at duty free shops in the terminals of international airports (and other duty free jurisdictions).

Within this wonderful realm of travel exclusives, there are some great values to be had and gems to be discovered. Considering not only the avid traveler who might find themselves having to make major beauty decisions in the duty free, but also everyone else who might be interested (some of these items are available in “regular retail” and online), I thought it might be fun to share some of my discoveries. The series will feature a new post on the first Tuesday of every month (or thereabouts).

First up is an item I’ve had in my collection for over a year: the Estee Lauder Ingenious Color Palette Makeup Travel Kit. I’m not sure if it is still available in all duty free locations, but I have seen it online as well as in some CCO’s (Cosmetic Company Outlets) in the U.S. Retail price in the range of $75.00 USD/$70.00 BSD/£44.00.

This kit has been well-loved. With its signature navy blue & gold packaging and the “EL” Watermark, it is a truly beautiful compact. The Ingenious Color Palette also packs quite a punch considering its modest size. It contains 4 lipsticks, 4 eye shadows, 1 blush, mini mascara, a finishing powder and some baby-sized brushes (lip brush, eye shadow brush, blush brush).

When you first open the palette, you see the pressed powder and lipstick tray. They pull aside to reveal the eye shadows, blush and mascara below. Incidentally, the lip tray and powder are also detachable, designed that way for increased portability. So, now worries, you can retouch your lipstick. In fact, the lip tray attachment is so slender & sleek that it can fit into smaller spaces than a regular lipstick bullet. Also, both trays feature a plastic cover to hel prevent unwanted mixing.

The lipstick tray includes the Pure Color Long Lasting Lipsticks in Pink Parfait (light, cooler pink), Wildly Pink (medium, warm reddish pink), Coral Fantasy (pink-coral), Bois de Rose (mauve-rose). They are 0.02 oz each.

The swatches are in the reverse order to how they appear in the photo above, starting with the rosy mauve and ending with the cool pink.:-)

I’ve worn all four shades (which should be apparent from the little divots). The formula is quite creamy and well pigmented. Actually, for a multi-purpose palette like this, I was surprised at the quality.

The four Pure Color eye shadows include three satin shimmers (a very light golden cream, cool pink, copper) and one dark brown matte in. They are: Glistening Gold, Nude Fresco, Sizzling Copper, and Chocolate Bliss (0.03 oz each). Again, all four shadows are of excellent quality – blend well and are decently pigmented. You really don’t need much more than this to create a neutral look for day and night. The matte brown shadow is fairly versatile – it can be used sparingly to give a lighter wash of color in the crease or packed on to create a darker smoky eye.

Finally, the palette also includes the Pure Color Blush in Peach Passion (0.09 oz), a mini of the Maximum Volume Mascara in Black and the AeroMatte Ultralucent Pressed Powder in Transparent #1W (0.14 oz). I am to understand that the Pressed Powder is discontinued in the U.S. but still available overseas. This is probably the one product in the kit that isn’t “universal”. However, it is truly translucent, lending itself to a range of skin tones (up to at least medium+).

With its convenient size and decent color options, the Estee Lauder Ingenious Color Palette has accompanied me on many short haul trips. Even for a makeup junkie like myself, I find it an ideal travel kit for weekend getaways (trips that span nor more than 2-4 days).

Do you guys shop the duty-free? Are you drawn to makeup travel kits and similiar such products?

  1. I love duty free shopping and often plan for it as the start of my holiday spending! I love that there are travel exclusives available, that are just so cute. Lovely palette. I’m pleased to see the lip colours had their own lid to keep them free from powder fall out. That’s a bug bear of mine.

Right? I was so surprised at the quality when I used it for the first time. It definitely made me more interested in checking out EL’s other travel kits. 🙂

  2. I haven’t shopped duty free cause I never had a need to having lived in the US all my life until just moving here to Nassau a few months ago.
Where are you in the Bahamas?

Right? I have noticed that depending on where you are, they don’t always have a testers of the travel collections to swatch etc…so I thought these types of posts might be helpful. 🙂

I travel quite often. You might think I’d pick up a travel edition easily because of it. But for some reason I never do! My bags are just stuffed with products every time – I’m just not a big fan of these palettes I think. I do love wandering around the duty free shops to pick up a few bits ofcourse 😉

It was this EL palette which introduced me to the potential for travel kits to be really good. I, too, always overlooked them in the past. And I agree, the duty free is a good place to find many little goodies.

  3. I’ve never bought any travel palettes even though I always look at them at the airport! I’ve looked at Chanel and Dior numbers in the past and maybe someday I will make my first travel set purchase! This one looks great as it has pretty much everything! 🙂 xx

I was the same before. And I think I had this idea in my head that the travel sets weren’t as good in terms of quality as the regular stuff, but this palette changed my mind! xo
