I’m a huge fan of Yves Saint Laurent beauty. I basically collect the YSL couture eyeshadow palettes. I purchased the YSL Chinese New Year palette released last year. I was born in the Year of the Monkey. Was there any doubt in your minds that 2016 palette would be mine as well? Probably not.
YSL says: Create a YSL signature look using warm pink and beautiful taupe eye shadow shades for an illuminated look. YSL wishes you a lucky start to the New Year. Celebrate the year of the monkey: a year of ambition and charm. Inspired by handcrafted metal work, this glamourous limited edition gold palette is reminiscent of Yves Saint Laurent’s appreciation for bringing artwork to life.
The 2016 YSL Chinese New Year palette (or Gold Lust palette) is basically the #7 Parisienne couture palette from the permanent collection housed in limited edition packaging. So if you already own that one, it might not be worth it to get this one just for the pretty packaging (or it could be, depends on your perspective). Luckily, I didn’t already own Parisienne. Now I get to have it in this pretty compact which, as YSL says, is reminiscent of gold metal work.
As you see, it is a beautiful composition of taupes, plums and pinks. All shades have some level of shimmer. Clockwise starting with the upper left there is a satin/shimer neutral taupe, a satin brownish plum, a cool frosty white, a satin/shimmer pale pink and a satin rosy taupe (this is probably my favorite shade).
You guys know the drill. I really enjoy the formula of couture palettes. The shadows have an extremely soft and creamy texture and decent pigmentation. Yes, there aren’t really any mattes in these palettes but I don’t mind that. Here are all five shadows worn on the eyes:
Using the eye shadows in the palette alone, you’ll end up with a fairly soft eye look as the plum shade is not very dark. This might not appeal to some who prefer something deeper for the outer crease. However, I think the look is quite delicate and sophisticated.
